A thousand years had passed since the priceless promises were made to Abram and a new era, the era of the kings of Israel and Judah was dawning on the

chosen land and people. Dark ages of lawlessness punctuated by glimmerings of light were being left behind. In the cradle of Samuel's great reformation a baby was born in Bethlehem of Judea, into a large family living on the pasture and produce of the hill couintry of Juday, south of Jebus, which is Jeruslaem

History flowed in the little child's veins, the history of Abraham's children from the going down into Egypt through the mighty deliverance and the wanderings in the wilderness, on to the inheritance of God's land. He was to become the father of a new history, for by him Israel would have a point of reference, a standard of comparision by which others would stand or fall. Doing that "which was right in the eyes of the Lord his God, like David his father" was the plumbline held against the royal house of Judah.

"A man after mine own heart" was the divine stamp upon the youth who came from tending the sheep. "The God of David" was a name by which the Lord of heaven and earth was later pleased to be know. The life which lies bewteen these two declarations of God is better known than the live of any man of that period whether in the Bible or in the world around. He is the schoolboy's hero as giant killer and outlaw, he is the man beloved of his friends even to the point of offering their lives and destiny to him, he is the master statesman and kingdom builder, he is the musician, inspired poet, and organiser of Temple worship, he is the sinner who gave opportunity to other men to mock and blaspheme the God of Israel, he is our kinsman in the slough of despond and on the heights of Zion - Daivd delivered and redeemed by the mercy and grace of God.

To him came the golden promises of a King to come, for whom was reserved the throne of the Lord in Jerusalem. To this King we say: Blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lrod, the root and offspring of David.
