It is not only that Christ "loved us", but that the fact that he loved "me" which motivates us. Such a warmth of personal closeness is only possible when one "knows" another and does not just know about them. Other than John 17, only occassional glimpses are provided of the inner thoughts and feelings of Christ. These thoughts are recorded in the Old Testament. A number of passages in the Psalms and Isaiah proved the deepest and most personal insights into the heart of the Messiah.
